Gretna Hall
High Tea
High Tea (tea or meat tea) is one name for the early evening meal. It is associated with the working class and is typically eaten between 5 pm and 7 pm. High tea typically consists of a hot dish, followed by cakes and bread, butter and jam. Occasionally there would be cold cuts of meat, such as ham. The term was first used around 1825, and “high” is used in the sense of well-advanced (like high noon) to signify that it was taken later in the day than afternoon tea. How interesting ….
Best news? It’s now available here at Gretna Hall! Treat yourself to high tea from 3-6pm – choose from a selection of soups, hot dishes, scones and of course tea or coffee to finish.
Picnics
Fancy something a little lighter? Why not try the picnic menu? Sit looking down over the green fields over the village out towards the Solway and even the Lake District on a super clear day! Set underneath the canopy of the majestic trees which line the drive, your picnic will be set up on the lawn for you with a picnic blanket and a wicker basket full of goodies for you to enjoy.
Curious what’s inside that wicker basket? Of course you are! You’ll get:
Available daily from 12noon to 3pm – rain or shine! Although we’ve got fingers and toes crossed for a sunny summer, if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate, we’ll whisk everything inside and your picnic will be waiting for you in our cosy lounge!
Fancy trying a high tea or picnic (or even both)? Simply give us a call on 01461 338257 and our team be happy to get you booked in!
